How to Safely Transfer Your Bank Account to Another Branch

Step-by-step process, documents needed and online options to move your account without hassle.

Why transfer your account?

Moving to a new city, a new job, or simply wanting a branch closer to home are the most common reasons. Transferring keeps your account number, history, fixed deposits and linked services intact — you don't need to close and reopen anything.

Note: after transfer your account number stays the same at most banks, but your IFSC and MICR codes change to the new branch. Always update them wherever you receive money (salary, UPI apps, investments).

Option 1: Transfer online (fastest)

SBI, HDFC, ICICI, Axis, PNB, Bank of Baroda and most large banks allow branch transfer through net banking or the mobile app. Look for 'Transfer of Savings Account' or 'Change Home Branch' under the Services / Requests menu.

Pick the new branch using its IFSC code (you can find it on this site), confirm with OTP, and the request is usually completed in 1–7 working days. Your KYC must be up to date for online transfer.

Option 2: Transfer at the branch

Visit either your current branch or the new branch and fill the account transfer request form. Carry your passbook, cheque book, debit card, a self-attested copy of Aadhaar and PAN, and a recent passport-size photo.

Some banks ask you to surrender unused cheque leaves — new ones will be issued with the new branch's IFSC and MICR printed on them.

After the transfer: checklist

1) Collect a new passbook and cheque book. 2) Update the new IFSC with your employer, EPFO, mutual funds, insurance and loan EMIs. 3) Re-check UPI apps — most update automatically, but verify once. 4) Keep the old cheques away; they may be rejected.

Tip: Search your new branch above and copy the exact IFSC with one tap so you never type it wrong.
